Is furnace cleaning the same as duct cleaning?

I saw a $79 duct cleaning flyer in my mailbox. Is it legitimate?
Almost certainly not. Offers in the $49–$99 range for "whole home duct cleaning" are consistently reported as bait-and-switch operations. Technicians arrive, find "additional problems," and the price escalates to $500+ before the real work begins — or they leave having done minimal cleaning. A legitimate full-system cleaning for an average Calgary home takes 2–3 hours and cannot be done profitably at those prices.
What furnace filter should I buy?
Check your existing filter frame for the size (it's printed on the cardboard edge). For most Calgary homes, a MERV-8 filter is a good balance — it catches fine particles without overly restricting airflow. MERV-11 to MERV-13 is appropriate for allergy-sensitive households, but confirm your furnace is rated for higher-MERV filters (they create more resistance).
