What's Included in a Furnace & Duct Cleaning?

Not all furnace and duct cleaning services are equal. Here's a complete breakdown of every component a legitimate professional cleaning covers — and what to ask about if a company doesn't mention it.

The Complete Component Checklist

Ductwork — Supply Side

Supply ducts carry heated or cooled air from the furnace to each room in your home. Every branch line is cleaned — from the main trunk line all the way to each individual register. Technicians insert agitation tools (spinning brushes, air whips) into the ducts and use negative pressure to pull debris toward the vacuum truck.

Ductwork — Return Side

Return ducts pull stale air back toward the furnace. These are often larger-diameter runs and can accumulate significant dust, especially near the main return grille. Both the return runs and the main return plenum are included.

All Supply Registers

Every floor, wall, and ceiling register (the decorative grates in each room) is removed, cleaned, and reinstalled. Registers trap significant amounts of dust, pet hair, and debris over time.

All Return Air Grilles

Return grilles — typically larger, found in hallways, living areas, or utility rooms — are also removed and cleaned. The filter rack behind the main return grille is cleaned as well.

The Furnace Blower Fan & Motor Housing

The blower fan (squirrel cage) is the motor that forces air through the entire system. Dust buildup on the fan blades reduces airflow and causes the motor to work harder. Technicians clean the blades, the housing, and the compartment.

Heat Exchanger (External Surface)

The heat exchanger is the component that transfers heat from combustion to the air in your ducts. Its external surfaces are cleaned with compressed air and brushes to remove dust that reduces heat transfer efficiency.

The Plenum (Air Distribution Chamber)

The plenum is the large box at the top of the furnace that distributes air into the supply duct branches. It's often one of the dustiest components and is fully cleaned during a professional service.

Evaporator Coil Compartment (If Applicable)

If your home has central air conditioning, the evaporator coil sits above the furnace. The compartment and accessible coil surfaces are cleaned — buildup on the coil reduces A/C efficiency and can harbour mold growth.

Drip Pan

Located below the evaporator coil, the drip pan collects condensation. If not cleaned regularly, it becomes a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. It's cleaned and inspected during the service.

What's Not Included (and Why)

Dryer Vent Cleaning

The dryer vent exhausts to the exterior of the home and is a completely separate system from the HVAC ducts. It's a common add-on — and an important one, as lint-clogged dryer vents are a leading cause of house fires. Ask us to add it to your appointment.

Furnace Filter Replacement

Technicians will remove the old filter and often flag its condition, but the new filter is typically supplied by the homeowner. We recommend having one ready. See the preparation guide for details.

Interior Duct Lining Repairs

If ducts have deteriorated insulation lining inside (sometimes found in older homes), cleaning dislodges it. Repair or replacement of duct lining is a separate remediation service.
